Obsidian has been discontinued, replaced by Apple's official dark menu bar and Dock available from the General preferences in OS X Yosemite. This hack has been tested with OS X 10.9 - 10.9.5 Mavericks.
Before upgrading to a newer system version, be sure to restore the default OS X menu bar. Obsidian will be tested and updated with each new version of OS X.
This hack replaces system files that controls how the menu bar looks. This process has proven relatively harmless. However, there is always a risk when modifying system resources.

To customize which menu icons gets a white icon, you can delete files from the Installer Content folder/Menu Items/Menu Extras for example. Just make sure to leave the folder there, or the script will bail out.
This method is useful if you keep menu items in Bartender and would like them to keep their appearance.
